Title: The Christ’s Light Dispels The Darkness
Date: September 7, 2021
I tend to find myself at times wishing for days of old. Life was much less complicated, and evil didn’t seem so rampant. However when reading the following words from Ephesians, I’m comforted to know that the Lord chose us to live in these times to shine His beautiful light. What an honor and privilege it is to help keep the Spirit of God alive in this dark world!
Find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless days of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is the light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said, “Wake up, oh sleeper, rise from the dead and Christ will shine on you.”
Be very careful, then how you live, not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
The first few words, “Find out what pleases the Lord” really caught my eye this morning. As Christians we live in an age that demands much responsibility. The Lord desires our light to shine before men. And He states what the purpose is in these verses…to fully EXPOSE the deeds of darkness. For without the light of Christ on this earth, nothing would be made visible! Have we not experienced darkness made visible like never before? We need to take heart, rather than despair, for it is written that evil would be made known expressly so that Christ’s light would shine more brightly. I think this is exactly where we find ourselves today. This is why we were created…for these times!
The choice of words here is so appropriate for these days: “Wake up oh sleeper…” Has the Lord gotten the world’s attention yet? Have we woken up? I know there are many of you who have been fighting the good fight for decades, but doesn’t it feel like the world is finally catching up to you? I feel like I have been asleep at the wheel for an entire lifetime and one morning I woke up to all of this craziness!
Has the world become more evil? I believe the answer is no! When we read through the Old Testament we quickly come to recognize that history is repeating itself. Evil hasn’t necessarily become worse, it always was. Scripture tells us it just becomes more visible and more evident during dark times.
However Gods word says when we do “Wake up”…. look out for Christ’s light will shine upon us to basically expose the unrestrained evil that is rearing it’s ugly head! This is our call, our purpose! This should be our reason to live, but then human nature takes hold and says…but Lord what about my sweet innocent grandchildren, and I find myself (for their sake) wishing away the realities of today! So, today’s reminder starts right here with me, and I pray it benefits you as well!
I read an open letter written by a father as he rocked his new baby and pondered the world into which he was born. In that moment, God spoke loud and clear to this father’s heart and I have often thought upon his profound words since reading it. He wrote, “Do not mourn this world that your children or grandchildren are born into. We do not need to worry or despair and wish for brighter days. For that baby you are rocking or that child you are safely putting to sleep was created for such times as these. For only God knows…you may be praying over the next modern day Deborah or David! For those precious babies may grow up one day to change the course of this next generation. Or perhaps they were born to simply live a quiet Christ-filled life, but as Oswald Chambers once described, will have every minute they live used by God.”
If I use the power of Jesus Christ appropriately in my life, His light in me should be screaming to a weary world, “I’m not telling you how big my problems are, I’m telling you how big my God is.” OUCH, that one hurts! I really need to keep that at the forefront of my thoughts and my words these days. It can be challenging though! And there are those times where I feel majorly unqualified to shine Gods light, especially when I am scared or worried about these times just as unbelievers are. That’s when iron sharpens iron…that’s when we come alongside one another to encourage and remind each other just how big our God is, and He never fails…even when we may feel as if we do!
Somehow it is hard to grasp that the same amazing Creator who spoke the galaxy into existence looked at you and me, and thought this broken world needed us too. It’s even more astonishing that He chose us to exist in a time where our opportunities to reveal His goodness and truth are endless! Oh Lord please help us recognize the talents, gifts and opportunities you have intentionally given us. Help us to navigate the times we live in, and not live in denial over what we face, but to not lose sight of what’s ahead! Help us to take our eyes off the darkness which surrounds and cast it upon the bright light that will forever shine! May we be filled with the Spirit always giving thanks for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, the One who created us for this exact moment in time!
For we are God’s handiwork created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Who will rise up for me against the wicked?
Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life which God has promised to those who love him.
Isn’t it interesting that light is one of the most prevalent themes throughout the Bible, from the first few verses in the book of Genesis to the very last thing the Lord does in the book of Revelation?
Isn’t it fascinating when you think of the natural instinct of even a child? Do they not all have a need to sleep with some form of light on? It’s as if they are naturally afraid of the dark! Coincidence or God’s natural instinct He placed upon children from the beginning?
We as believers know the end. The book of Revelation tells us that God will set up a new kingdom, and there will no longer be a need for lamps, the light of the sun or the stars. For the Lord will provide our light. Have you ever considered that even a tiny light helps negate darkness? It doesn’t take much. In the same sense not everyone is called to be an evangelist or a missionary who leads with great courage. God has placed in each one of us a calling, and not one is insignificant. Whether we are on the front lines battling against the current evil, or representing Christ in other ways…our light shines! It’s who we were created to be! So, let’s praise God we were born for such a time as this. Let’s stay strong and courageous, exposing darkness with truth! May we worry less and focus more of our attention on spreading God’s righteousness and winning over souls. We will have many stories to tell one day on the other side of this life!
Remember friends, in our physical world, no light is self-sustaining. It always requires a power source. May we as God’s children never forget to plug into our power source, our hope and strength, our cherished treasure: our Father, our God!
Delighting in safe pasture,
